Waste Management

India suffers from a major problem of waste management. Tons of wastes are generated every day and this problem is not of India alone. So the question arises what can be done?

Searching for this answer I stumbled upon what society thinks. I understood that every one is relying on government to solve the problem of waste management.

Well the solution does involve the role of government, but society also needs to take part in this solution. The solution for this menace starts with behavioural change.

Indore has been the cleanest city of India for past 5 years. What sets it apart? The answer is behaviour of people. People of Indore segregate the waste into 6 different category, which helps the municipality to treat the waste easily and efficiently.

But changing behaviour is not that easy. One easy way out is incentivisation. Waste collection centres can be setup at prominent locations in towns. Citizens will be required to segregate their wastes into different categories and should deposit the wastes at these centres. At the end of month they can take away items put at these waste centres as incentives. These items can include magazines, stationary, vegetables, crafts, forest products, etc. These items can be bought by government from the saved money of transportation of wastes from MSMEs, local artisans or tribals.

Thus this solution helps in behavioural change, saving transportation cost of wastes, decentralized treatment of wastes and reviving local economy. A win-win situation for all.
